If my kids were younger and had less of a ‘Mom! Stop taking our picture!’ attitude, the picture above would be one that I would have snapped of us last night all piled together on my king-sized bed — reading.
It’s the revival of family reading time that we did regularly way back in the day.
I didn’t think I would have a problem getting the boys to agree to do this, but how they positioned themselves to get started blew me away. I worked super hard to hold it together and not squeal outloud in delight or else they’d flee for sure!
I thought we would all gather in the living room with our individual books and pick a comfy spot on one of the couches to quietly read. But what unfolded in front of my ever grateful mommy eyes was each kid tossing their book onto my bed and running back and forth from their rooms with reading pillows and something to drink.
I didn’t understand what was going on at first. I actually thought they were stalling or housing around.
But then Alex, my soon to be 16 year old – whose teenage-itis has caused him to shy away from cuddling with me – walked into my room and plopped himself on the bed ready to read.
????????!!!!!!!!
For those who know Alex, this is A BIG DEAL.
His younger brother, Joshie followed after him.
My brain (I’m sloooow) finally figured out that they naturally kicked into their old habit of how we used to cuddle and read in bed together!
It was blissful. It was joyous. It was wonderful. It was one more thing I was grateful to God for. That I would still get to experience these moments with them.
To the mothers of young children: When you hear the phrase ‘Enjoy them now because they grow up so fast’ — nothing could be more true.
